The Hidden Trail to Red Dao Village takes you northeast of Sapa town, past the crowds, and into a completely separate world: the Red Dao communities of Ta Phin Village.
The Red Dao (Yao) are one of Vietnam's most visually striking ethnic minorities, immediately recognizable by the women's elaborate red embroidered headwear and richly decorated brocade clothing. Unlike the Black Hmong, the Red Dao are particularly renowned for their traditional knowledge of medicinal plants — and specifically, the therapeutic herbal bath using mountain plants that has been passed down through generations. Ta Phin Village, 17km northeast of Sapa, is the primary Red Dao community in this area and receives far fewer visitors than the Muong Hoa Valley, preserving a more authentic cultural encounter.
On Day 1, a short vehicle transfer takes you down to Mong Sen, where the trek begins. The 9km hidden trail climbs and descends through pine forest, mountain slopes, and terraced fields before arriving at Ta Phin Village. Afternoon is spent at a local Red Dao family home — learning about brocade weaving, traditional costumes, and the medicinal herb traditions. Optional: a Red Dao herbal bath to soothe your muscles. Dinner and overnight at the homestay.
On Day 2, after breakfast, the trek continues up through the mountains back toward Sapa, passing through Ma Tra Village — home of the Black Hmong, with dramatic terraced rice fields and the atmospheric ruins of a French colonial nunnery from the early 1900s. Return to Sapa for the journey back to Hanoi.

Sapa — Mong Sen — Ta Phin Village
You will be picked up from your Sapa accommodation and transferred by vehicle — approximately 1 hour downhill to Mong Sen, where your trek begins. The route descends steeply from here, following mountain trails that wind through pine forest and terraced hillsides rarely seen by standard tour groups.
After lunch, the trek continues to Ta Phin Village — a traditional Red Dao brocade craft community where you will see the Red Dao and Black Hmong tribes and be struck by their distinctive traditional costumes. The Red Dao women wear elaborate red embroidered headscarves and richly decorated clothing; the brocade patterns encode stories and symbols passed through generations.
Sit with local residents at their homes to learn about special customs, festival traditions and daily highland life. Your guide facilitates introductions and translates stories that most visitors never hear. Optional: a Red Dao traditional herbal bath — using 10+ mountain medicinal plants to soothe tired muscles (pay locally).
Have dinner with your host family and stay overnight at the homestay in Ta Phin Village.
Ta Phin — Ma Tra Village — Return to Sapa
After breakfast at the homestay, continue the trek climbing in the direction of Sapa. The trail passes through several small communities and terraced rice fields before arriving at Ma Tra Village — home of the Black Hmong people, and one of the most dramatically scenic villages in the Sapa area.
Ma Tra is known for its charming natural scenery — sweeping terraced farms spread across the mountainside, and the atmospheric ruins of a French colonial nunnery from the early 1900s, often mistaken for a monastery. This quiet stop reveals a layer of Sapa's history that most tour itineraries never mention.
Continue trekking back to Sapa town, arriving in time for lunch before the return journey to Hanoi. The return bus departs Sapa in the afternoon, arriving at your Hanoi hotel in the evening.
