Trip Itinerary

WHY THIS JOURNEY STANDS OUT

Follow Vietnam’s story through the cities and heritage places that shaped it

Over 7 days, the journey moves from Ho Chi Minh City through Cu Chi Tunnels and Tien Giang before ending in Can Tho. What keeps the route interesting is how the experience changes from one chapter to the next; the signature moments below show where that contrast becomes part of the journey.

What makes this itinerary worth comparing is the balance between experiences, travel time and overnight stops. The day-by-day plan below shows where the pace changes, what is included, where you sleep and how each destination connects to the next, while keeping the confirmed free time visible instead of hiding it inside a packed schedule. It also makes the main transfer sectors easy to spot, so you can judge whether the journey feels comfortable for the way you like to travel.

The Cu Chi Tunnels underground

2Day 2: Cu Chi Tunnels and Ho Chi Minh City Tour

Morning

Get ready at your hotel and wait for your pickup. Today begins with a tour to the Cu Chi Tunnels, located about 60 kilometers from the city center. This extensive underground network served as a vital Viet Cong base during the war. Stretching over 200 kilometers, these tunnels enabled guerrilla fighters to move undetected, store supplies, and launch surprise attacks.

First, visitors will watch a short documentary on how these tunnels were constructed and their critical role during the war. Then, they can walk through preserved sections of the tunnel system and see booby traps, hidden entrances, and kitchens that operated under siege. This highlights the ingenuity and resilience of those who lived and fought here.

Afterward, You'll enjoy a light lunch and try some regional specialties, giving you a taste of local flavors before the next trip.

Afternoon

We travel back to Ho Chi Minh City with a guided city tour. The first stop is the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office, two iconic French colonial landmarks.

The Cathedral is the largest Catholic church in Vietnam and was a central place of worship for French settlers and Vietnamese Catholics. The Post Office is an impressive structure dating back to the 19th century, showcasing the French Renaissance style, and used by the South Vietnamese government for relaying messages.

NOTE: The Notre Dame Cathedral will be temporarily closed for repairs until 2027.

Next, we will explore the Reunification Palace, previously the Presidential Palace of South Vietnam, where Viet Cong soldiers’ tanks crashed through the gates, marking the end of the war. Get inside, visitors can explore war rooms, underground bunkers, and strategy rooms used during the conflict.

Afterward, we have a trip to the War Remnants Museum, which provides a sobering view of the war’s impact, with exhibitions focusing on both Vietnamese and foreign perspectives. Particularly notable is the photographic archive by journalists from around the world, documenting the human cost of war.

The tour concludes at Ben Thanh Market, a signature of the social life of local people. It remained a bustling commercial center from the past till modern day. Now this bustling market has a wide array of local goods and distinctive souvenirs, ideal for those who want some gifts for their families.

Evening

After the city tour, You'll return to your hotel for relaxation, capping up a great day full of history, culture, and encounters.

3Day 3: Ho Chi Minh City - Long An - Tien Giang: Resistance in the Delta

Morning

After breakfast, we travel by road to Long An Province for about 1 -1.5 hours. This is a region known for early resistance movements. The first stop is the Vam Nhut Tao Historical Site commemorates Nguyen Trung Truc, a 19th-century nationalist who led local uprisings against French colonial forces. His legacy reflects the longstanding spirit of defiance in southern Vietnam, which would later inspire resistance against American-backed forces.

Continuing southward into Tien Giang Province, you’ll explore Ap Bac, the site of a pivotal battle that took place in 1963. Here, a small force of Viet Cong guerrillas held off a much larger American unit equipped with helicopters, armored personnel carriers, and artillery. Military historians often cite Ap Bac as the indicator of the immense fighting ability of the Viet Cong.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, travelers can unwind with a boat trip on the Tien River. This is your chance to observe the rich, water-based lifestyle of the Mekong Delta: fishing boats, lush riverbanks, vast tropical fruit farms, etc.

Later, you’ll explore a local orchard and learn about the sustainable farming practices of the friendly locals that were passed down through generations.

Evening

After a long day, we spend the night in My Tho (Tien Giang) at a comfortable hotel or homestay, offering a quiet rest surrounded by the tranquility of the Delta.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

4Day 4: Tien Giang - Cai Be - Tra Vinh: The Heart of Guerrilla Warfare

Morning & Afternoon.

We begin the day with a scenic boat ride through Cai Be's intricate network of coconut-lined canals. These waterways were used extensively during the war for covert movements by Vietnamese guerrillas and also functioned as a crucial supply link for weapons and medical supplies.

From Cai Be, we drive deeper to reach Tra Vinh, a province with a significant ethnic Khmer population. During the war, the area's maze of rivers and forests served as cover for guerrilla activities, with many villagers supporting resistance efforts by sheltering fighters and providing intelligence.

Discover the place, visitors can gain insight into the community's role during the conflict. Though ethnically and culturally distinct, the locals joined the broader Vietnamese resistance, contributing significantly to local guerrilla efforts. Afterward, the tour ends with a explore to an ancient Khmer pagoda.

Evening

Overnight in Tra Vinh offers a unique opportunity to experience both the spiritual serenity and strategic importance of this lesser-known region.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Hotel in Tra Vinh

5Day 5: Tra Vinh - Can Tho - U Minh Thuong: Into the Wetlands

Morning & Afternoon.

Today, You'll continue to Can Tho to explore the famous Cai Rang Floating Market. This market offers a glimpse into how lively daily life of the locals, and how river commerce was both a cultural tradition and a strategic challenge in the Mekong Delta.

The journey continues west to the U Minh Thuong historical and ecological tourist site in Kien Giang Province. This swampy, densely forested area served as a vital sanctuary for the Viet Cong army. U Minh was one of the most impenetrable guerrilla bases during both the French Indochina War and the later American phase of the resistance.

In these inhospitable swamps, resistance forces built bunkers, kitchens, and communication centers. Despite extensive defoliation campaigns and bombing by American forces, the base remained operational throughout the war. Today, U Minh Thuong is a protected national park, and you’ll explore its unique wetland ecosystem by boat, imagining the endurance required to survive and resist from within this green labyrinth.

Evening

After finishing the day tour, You'll spend the night in a nearby hotel in Rach Gia (Kien Giang) or U Minh Thuong.

Then, we pack our luggage and return to Ho Chi Minh City by road (approx. 6 - 7 hours), passing through the vast flatlands and rice paddies of the Delta. This drive offers time for quiet contemplation. As the urban skyline reappears, it’s a reminder of how far the country has come, from fields of fire to fast-growing cities.

Back in the city, check in to your hotel and enjoy some free time to relax, explore markets, or revisit favorite spots from earlier in the trip.

PLANNING QUESTIONS

Questions & Answers

Built from this tour’s confirmed route, transport, stays, meals and activity level so the answers stay specific to this itinerary.

Is 7 Days too rushed for this Vietnam route?

7 Days is a compact Vietnam program. It can work well if these are the places you most want to see, but expect less spare time between major transfers. The route remains Ho Chi Minh City → Cu Chi Tunnels → Can Tho.

How much travelling is involved between destinations?

This is a multi-stop itinerary rather than a single-base holiday. The route overview shows the confirmed sequence Ho Chi Minh City → Cu Chi Tunnels → Can Tho. Where the itinerary identifies a flight, road transfer, train or boat, that transport mode is shown on the journey map so you can understand the travel flow before booking.

Are the domestic flights included in the tour price?

The itinerary uses one or more flight sectors, but the inclusion data saved for this tour does not clearly confirm every flight as included. Treat the itinerary and the Inclusions section together and ask EcoTravel to confirm the exact sectors before payment.

What accommodation is used during the trip?

The accommodation summary for this itinerary is: Hotel (6 nights). If room category, bedding, private bathroom or hotel level matters to you, send that requirement before booking so the confirmed option can be checked rather than assumed.

Does the itinerary include any real free time?

Yes. One or more days include genuine free-time or leisure periods. We keep those periods clearly marked so you can see which days are structured and which give you space to rest or explore independently.

Is this tour suitable for older travelers or people who prefer a gentler pace?

The main question is not age by itself but the length of transfer days, walking at sightseeing stops and how often the hotel changes. Review the day-by-day route and tell EcoTravel about mobility or pace concerns so the demanding sections can be identified before booking.

Which meals are included, and can dietary requirements be handled?

The current meal summary is: 5 Breakfasts, 4 Lunches, 1 Dinner. Dietary requests are not assumed to be available everywhere, so mention vegetarian, vegan, allergy or other requirements before booking and EcoTravel can confirm what the operators on this exact route can accommodate.

Are optional activities or extra costs mixed into the main itinerary?

No. Optional activities and extra costs are kept separate from the core included program. Check the Exclusions and Important Notes sections for anything that may need separate payment.

Can this itinerary be adjusted for a private trip or specific travel needs?

Do not assume every scheduled element can be changed without affecting the route or price. Send your dates, group size and the exact change you need; EcoTravel can check what is customizable while keeping the published itinerary clear and easy to compare.

LOCAL TRAVEL NOTES

What to know before travelling in Vietnam

Practical advice from a local operator for packing, weather, money, documents and the small details that can make a multi-stop trip much easier.

What to pack for this route

Bring comfortable walking shoes, light breathable clothing, sun protection, a compact rain layer and personal medication and a small day bag.

Weather: plan by region, not one forecast

Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong stay warm year-round, with more frequent afternoon rain from May to November. A light rain layer is useful even in the drier months.

Money, exchange and fair payment

Vietnam’s currency is the đồng (VND). Keep some cash for markets, street food and smaller local purchases; cards are practical for many larger expenses. Exchange rates move daily, so use the exact VND amount shown by your bank, card terminal or EcoTravel payment confirmation rather than an old screenshot. Before approving a card payment, check the number of zeros and the final VND total. A useful local check: the 20,000 VND and 500,000 VND notes are both blue-toned, so look at the printed value before handing one over.

Passport and entry documents

Entry and visa rules depend on nationality and can change. Check the requirements that apply to your passport before departure, and make sure the name, passport number, validity dates and planned entry point on your documents match your actual trip. If you are unsure, send EcoTravel your nationality and travel dates before booking so we can flag what you need to verify.

Phone, internet and cash away from cities

A local SIM or eSIM is useful for maps and messaging. In remote villages, mountain areas and small river stops, signal and card acceptance can be weaker, so keep some VND cash and save key hotel/guide details offline.

Health, comfort and local etiquette

Carry your regular medication, use bottled or properly filtered drinking water, and consider travel insurance for active itineraries. Dress respectfully at temples and religious sites, and tell EcoTravel in advance about allergies, mobility concerns or motion sickness.

Before you confirm

For a multi-stop Vietnam itinerary, send your exact travel dates, group size and preferred hotel level. If international or domestic flights are part of your wider trip, mention them so connection timing can be checked against Day 1 and the final day.
