Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Minimum 2 days 1 night to see Ban Gioc Waterfall and Phong Nam Valley. However, we recommend 3 days 2 nights to also explore Bao Lac, Me Pja Pass, Angel Eye Mountain and ethnic villages. If you have time, 4-5 days allows deeper exploration of remote areas.
Average cost per person for 3 days 2 nights:
- Bus round-trip: $20
- Homestay/hotel: $16 ($8/night x 2)
- Meals: $24 ($8/day x 3)
- Entrance fees: $8
- Motorbike rental/fuel: $12
Total: ~$80/person (budget travel)
If traveling by private limousine with 8 people, add only ~$20/person for much more comfort.
Both are beautiful but different:
- Cao Bang: Spectacular waterfalls, green valleys, fewer tourists, cheaper, good for those who like peace and quiet
- Ha Giang: More challenging mountain passes, buckwheat flowers, many viewpoints, suitable for adventure riders
If you prefer pristine nature and avoiding crowds, choose Cao Bang. If you like challenges and dangerous mountain passes, choose Ha Giang. Why not visit both?
Ban Gioc is most impressive during June-September (rainy season). The water flows powerfully, creating spectacular white foam. However, this season has frequent rain.
If you want good weather with still-full waterfall, visit early October - enough water, dry weather, and golden rice fields.
Highly recommended! Especially if you:
- ✓ Travel in groups of 4-8 people (cost-effective when split)
- ✓ Want flexible itinerary and photo stops anytime
- ✓ Don't want to drive long distances yourself
- ✓ Want local driver to suggest hidden gems
- ✓ Value comfort - new vehicles, massage seats, WiFi, water
Much more comfortable than public bus, and you control your own schedule!
Cao Bang is very safe. Local people are friendly, and pickpocketing/scams are rare. However:
- ⚠️ Be careful driving on mountain passes (narrow roads, sharp curves)
- ⚠️ Don't trek far or into forests alone
- ⚠️ Bring enough cash (not all places have ATMs)
Overall, Cao Bang is one of the safest destinations in Vietnam.
