2Day 2: Hanoi - Traces of War and Resilience

Enjoy a fulfilling breakfast at your hotel. Our day begins at the Vietnam Military History Museum. Newly opened in 2025, the museum showcases a wide collection of war relics, photographs, and historical documents about the struggle for national independence of the heroic Vietnam People's Army. It currently holds more than 150,000 artifacts, including 4 national treasures and many valuable artifacts.
Next, we continue to Huu Tiep Lake, nestled in Ngoc Ha Village. Here lies the rusted wreckage of a U.S. B-52 Stratofortress shot down during the intense bombing campaign known as Operation Linebacker II in December 1972. This serene setting is a striking juxtaposition to the intense aerial combat that once took place overhead of Hanoi.
Afternoon
After lunch, visitors will travel to the Hoa Lo Prison, infamously known to American POWs as the "Hanoi Hilton." Originally built by the French to house political prisoners, the facility was later used to detain U.S. Pilots captured during the air campaigns. The museum presents a dual narrative of Vietnamese struggles against colonial rule and the imprisonment of American servicemen. Visitors will gain insight into how the resilient spirit and endurance of Vietnamese patriots intersected within these walls.
Next, we explore the Presidential Palace Historical Site, which includes the stilt house and wartime bunker where President Ho Chi Minh lived and worked during critical periods of the resilient war. After breakfast, You'll check out and board a short flight (about 1 hour) to Dien Bien Phu. This site marks one of the most significant battles of the 20th century, the final engagement of the First Indochina War.
Upon arrival at the airport, a local guide and driver will transfer you to your hotel. Let’s have a nice rest before embarking on an engaging exploration of this historic battlefield.
Afternoon
We begin the trip with a explore to Hill A1 (Éliane 2), a strategic point heavily fortified by the French and fiercely contested during the 56-day siege. The hill remains pockmarked with trenches, bunkers, and craters, offering a haunting window into the intensity of the combat.
Afterward, get to General De Castries’ bunker (Ham Do Cat), the underground headquarters where the French commander eventually surrendered on May 7, 1954. The defeat marked the end of French colonial rule in Indochina.
Next, we travel to Muong Phang, a mountainous area that housed the headquarters of General Vo Nguyen Giap. From here, the Vietnamese soldiers orchestrated the artillery-led siege that surrounded and cut off the French garrison.
